With winter now well and truly upon us, ‘sensible’ women everywhere are squirreling away their heels and embracing their flats.
But I ask you this – though the weather is truly miserable – do we really need to punish our feet?! Whilst I admit to occasionally being partial to an odd pair of flats (for when only comfort will do) I’m proud to say that I’m a high heels kind of girl at heart.
At this time of year, I am always confronted by people who tell me that ‘high heels are dangerous in winter’ and argumentative types who feel that only flats will do. But I have some news for them, this is not entirely true.
So for all of you out there who weep at the thought of having to wave goodbye to your heels for the entire season, listen up. Here’s why you definitely should wear heels in winter:
1) When you wear high heels, you always have to concentrate on your next step in case you trip, fall over or get your heel stuck in some random black hole. In flats, you can walk along without a care in the world. Now I don’t know about you but when I”m negotiating icy pavements, I’d rather have my wits about me. High heels are a constant and sensible reminder to watch where you’re going and to tread carefully. Health and safety at it’s very best.
2) Winter can be brutal and let’s face it, nobody wants to walk about in nasty, windy, wet weather. So take my advice – stick on your high heels and get a taxi. Wearing heels means you’ll have no choice but to limit how far you walk which means less feeling cold and less looking like you’ve been dragged through a bush backwards.
3) When it’s cold and grey outside, we all need something to cheer ourselves up. Wearing high heels makes us look better, walk taller and provides us with an instant confidence boost. They’re also fun and look pretty. All in all, the perfect antidote to winter gloom.
4) Yes, it’s the season of cold days and dark nights but it’s also the party season and nothing says party time quite like a fabulous pair of high heels. When it’s too cold to wear your favourite dress or when your beloved outfit no longer fits because of stodgy winter food, have no fear…. just dig out your high heels and you’ll be good to go. Think satin, think sparkle, think shiny or new. And remember this – at Christmas, only heels will do.
Love your heels. Love winter.
